In 1960 The Beatles went to play in Hamburg,
Germany. They lived in an area full of gangsters and
prostitutes. Their accommodation was terrible.
They played six hours a night, seven days a week. To stay
awake they took amphetamines - their first introduction
to drugs. It was very hard work but they became a much
better band.
The German authorities deported George
Harrison because his work permit was illegal (he was only
17). The group returned to Liverpool but Stuart stayed in
Hamburg to paint. He died a year later.
