Apple
Corp
Soon after their return
from India, The Beatles launch their own company,
Apple Corps. Paul describes Apple as 'a kind of
Western Communism'. John promises 'artistic freedom'.
They invite undiscovered talent to send in tapes.
Thousands of tapes arrive. So do requests for funding for
strange projects. They give a large amount of cash to an
'inventor' called Magic Alex. They buy a Greek island but
rarely bother to visit it.
They even open an Apple Shop in London. This is an open
invitation to shoplifters to come and help themselves. Most
of the stock quickly disappears under their jackets and in
their bags.
Spending is completely out of control. When the accountants
finally do an audit in 1970, they are forced to write off
three cars. Nobody can find the receipts - or the cars
themselves.
