Changes
Musically there were big
changes. Lennon was now writing more personal songs. He
describes his painful family history in Julia and his political views
in Revolution.
He attacks the
Maharashi in Sexy Sadie
and
'Beatlemania' in Glass
Onion.
With the help of producer George Martin, McCartney
experiments with new techniques. He also writes some of his
most beautiful melodies, including Blackbird.
George Harrison
also writes one of his best songs While my Guitar Gently
Weeps.
Tension
Relations were now particularly difficult between Lennon
and McCartney. The two songwriters were going in different
directions musically and personally. Each wrote and
recorded 'their' songs, often not involving the other.
For the public their division
was symbolised by their new girlfriends: the American
photographer, Linda Eastman and the Japanese experimental
artist, Yoko Ono. Neither was popular with the British
public.
