Magical Mystery Tour
‘When Brian
died, I knew we were in trouble.’
John Lennon
Brian's death marks a turning
point in the story of The Beatles. The Beatles are without
a manager and problems between Lennon and McCartney become
more serious. Paul tries to organise the band but the
others don't like it. 'He started talking about
rehearsals,' Lennon says later. 'We hadn't rehearsed for
years.'
The first major post-Brian project is a television special
called Magical Mystery Tour.
Now The Beatles are so powerful that they make all the
decisions. Whereas with their previous two films, they
relied on the expertise of director Richard Lester, this
time they do everything themselves. The result is a mess.
The film of Magical Mystery Tour receives poor reviews.
It's the first major failure since their early success.
In artistic terms, however, 1967 is still a fantastic year
for The Beatles. They make some of their best-loved records
including: All you Need is Love, Penny
Lane, Strawberry Fields and I am the
Walrus.
